The idea behind the company began during a snowboard trip to Lake Tahoe in March of 1991. Friends Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall spent a week in snowboarding heaven as new snow fell every day, creating perfect conditions. Their obsession with snowboarding began. They briefly discussed starting a clothing company, but it took until that spring for their idea to come to fruition. They decided to start a riding company based around their three favourite sports: surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding. With a loan from Woolcott's father, Volcom was born.
Today, Volcom is an international company with nearly 40 stores in 18 different countries, including eight in the USA and six in Canada. There are also stores in Germany, France, the UK, Costa Rica, Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, and more. Volcom is truly all over the world! The company also endorses some amazing international athletes, including surfers Kelly Slater and Coco H'o.
