Based upon the experience of Swedish skier Martin Matsbo with various natural waxes, Borje Gabrielsson founded Swix in 1946 in Sweden to apply a scientific approach to the development of a synthetic ski wax. This work was very successful and modern ski wax was born. By 1964 all production took place in Norway and the company's headquarters was moved to Lillehammer. In 1974 Swix acquired a Norwegian ski pole manufacturer in order to expand the business, and took a similar step in 1989 to move into the production of technical sportswear. From the outset, Swix applied a colour-coding to their different varieties of wax. This coding has since been adopted by the entire ski wax manufacturing industry.
By using information obtained from a professional skier Swix was able to take a cheap and plentiful by-product of petroleum refining and literally invent synthetic ski wax. This highly innovative and cost-effective approach means that the company was a market leader from the outset but remains so today thanks to the creation of new products such as roller skis.
Despite being an innovator Swix was not prepared to rest on its laurels and remain as just a ski wax manufacturer. To expand the business the company acquired manufacturers in related fields - ski poles and technical sportswear. This has allowed Swix to provide a more in-depth sales experience to its customers.
