In 1892, utiltising the basic design of a hand-held blowtorch, factory mechanic Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist hit upon the idea of directing the burner upwards and using it as a heat source for cooking. The result was the world's first pressurized stove and the new portable stove quickly found great popularity. Such was the robustness and quality of the “Primus stove it was used in Nansen's attempt to reach the North Pole, Amundsen's South Pole expedition of 1911 and George Mallory's unsuccessful 1924 attempt to climb Mount Everest.
From the earliest days the “Primus stove was received with acclaim and quickly earned a reputation for reliability and durability for both everyday use and in adverse conditions. From the 1930's into the 1950's Primus invested heavily in modernisation and developed stoves, lanterns and cylinders using liquid petroleum gas to replace the earlier kerosene (paraffin) models. Now based in Estonia, every Primus stove is hand-tested to ensure each one reaches the high quality standard and technical precision the company is renowned for. Today's Primus stoves are the result of decades of research and development and the award-winning company has branched into complementary camping products such as dishes, isothermal flasks, kettles and pots.
