Millet

Millet: the right stuff to rise up

The Millet story began in the French town of Saint-Fons in 1921 when founder Marc Millet opened his first workshop making canvas and shopping bags. However, with his 1928 move to Annecy in the French Alps, the company's focus changed.

In these surroundings encouraging an outdoor lifestyle, Millet launched a reinforced backpack and developed a reputation for its high-mountain products. Taking over from their father in 1945, Raymond and René Millet sold backpacks specifically for altitude and collaborated with mountaineer Louis Lachenal to invent innovative designs. In 1987, brand technical advisors and seasoned mountaineers Eric Escoffier and Christophe Profit completed the "Trilogy" (the north faces of the Grandes Jorasses, Matterhorn and Eiger) solo using the brand's creations.

Millet's history

Millet began in 1921, with its headquarters near Lyon where the Millets, husband and wife, made tote bags. Before long they migrated to the small commune of Annecy-le-Vieux, where the company they founded remains today, working with all sorts of outdoor kit.

Millet's strengths

Options enough for a hand-picked wardrobe

Millet branched out as it grew, and today it has so many product lines it could be considered overwhelming. It's not, however, because all of Millet's products stand shoulder-to-shoulder with several others filling the same niche. Millet offers several hoodies, quite a few trousers, many shoes, and lots and lots of backpacks. If there's a spec that you need a given item to meet, one of Millet's products in that niche can probably meet it.

Low impact on the environment

Millet markets its gear first to mountain athletes and sports-lovers of all types, and it's aware of the dangers that mountains face from damage to the environment. All of Millet's products follow its literal LOW IMPACT standard, which starts with using materials both recycled and not with low footprints, continues with holding certifications like BLUSIGN that show that Millet's commitment is serious, and finishes with managing different parts of the supply chain so that the company's environmental impact is low start to finish.

Jackets and other clothing

Millet makes durable jackets, using the same material standard as its backpacks with construction that keeps comfort in mind. Its jackets are fairly standardized, though there's enough variation that you could pick one for any mountain sport. And just as importantly, you can buy clothing that matches it: trousers, headbands, shirts and even shoes. Colour options exist, as you'd expect, and sizing options are quite good as well.

Backpacks and other bags

Though Millet was initially known for tote bags, it's become much more than just a bag company. Still, with sporting pockets and rugged construction, Millet's backpacks stand the test of time fairly well. If you need a bag for a specific purpose, Millet offers those too: its lines include virtually rain-proof specialized backpacks with tight drawstrings, oversized backpacks with plenty of extra room at the bottom, and even several sleeping bags, made with support to provide the warmth of a comfortable room no matter how chilly and wet your surroundings might currently be.
